Kerstin

She is more than just a candle

The birth of the candle head Kerstin

The Kerstin candlelight is a mould from a children’s doll head.

My friend and I had a bright idea one day of creating cool candlelights from various objects. We found some inspiration on Pinterest and then we decided on making a candle looking like a doll’s head - because why not?

We had a lot of fun creating this project, we worked on it almost every day for 2-3 weeks. It was a bit more challenging than expected, and even though the result wasn’t the perfection we were striving for, I’m very pleased with the progress of it.

Why did I choose to include Kerstin in my portfolio?

For the reactions, I got on social media.

I like to use my Instagram as a forum where I can simultaneously express myself and evoke a reaction or feeling from my viewers.

I like to think of my Instagram story as a virtual form of Andrea’s museum. Everyone is welcome to view, interrogate and reflect.

During the trial and error phase of Kerstin, we had to try different techniques, materials and tools to reach our goal. During this time I would post stories of our progress without any explanation. At first, I didn’t think it would create such a strong reaction from my peers, but as their confusion grew, my interest in continuing this story grew.

I do this sort of “social experiment” occasionally as I like to challenge myself and the people around me. I’m grateful for the opportunities technology, and social media have given us. Still, I’m a bit saddened by how we can sometimes get lonelier in a world which is getting smaller. We have access to any information within milliseconds, and when we are slightly out of our comfort zone, we start to freak out, which is why I like to challenge humankind with the beautiful unknown.

May she shine bright
